07/12/2004 FC Porto 2 Chelsea 1 Porto striker Benni McCarthy sent Chelsea crashing to a rare defeat and ensured former boss Jose Mourinho made a losing return to the club he guided to Champions League glory last season. In a game marred by racist chants directed towards Chelsea striker Didier Drogba from a small section of the home fans, Damien Duff put the Barclays Premiership side ahead with a deflected shot in the 34th minute. But Porto, outplayed for long spells, levelled the scoring in the 61st minute when Terry blocked a shot from Giourkas Seitaridis only for one-time Tottenham target Diego to send a 20-yard volley beyond Cech. McCarthy then headed the winner four minutes from time when he rose to meet Peixoto's left-wing cross to ensure Porto join Chelsea in the knockout phase. Mourinho was given a warm reception despite fears he would face a hostile welcome from the feared fans known as the 'Super Dragons'. Chelsea were determined to end Porto's interest in the competition with victory in this final Group H game and immediately motored into their familiar stride. In the fourth minute, a cross from Duff eluded the Porto defence only for Wayne Bridge - playing on the left side of midfield instead of the more orthodox left-back position he prefers - to send a right-foot drive beyond the left-hand post from 18 yards. Mourinho had opted to leave the wing wizard Arjen Robben on the bench and Duff and Didier Drogba were given the task of leading the attack. In the 11th minute, Chelsea almost opened the scoring when Didier Drogba's header from six yards was pushed on to the crossbar by Porto goalkeeper Nuno. Duff and Frank Lampard had combined down the right flank to engineer the opening and the latter's cross found Drogba unmarked in the danger area but Nuno was equal to his effort. Drogba was then the subject of monkey chants after twice clashing with Jorge Costa. The Porto defender was booked for his first tackle on the Chelsea striker and the disappointing racist chants emanated from a small section of the home fans. The Londoners made their overall superiority tell in the 34th minute when Lampard found Duff on the right flank with a delightful crossfield pass. The Irishman still had much work to do as he advanced towards the angle of the penalty area but he managed to turn and deliver a shot which took a slight deflection on its way into the net - although Nuno's attempt to save was weak. It was due reward for Chelsea, who had looked by far the most adventurous of the two sides. The goal prompted Chelsea fans to taunt their Portuguese counterparts by singing the name of Jose Mourinho - the predictable response was a chorus of boos from the home fans. Carvalho was booked for a rash challenge on Diego and once again players from both sides became embroiled in a group altercation which referee Massimo Busacca had to control before it got out of hand. Mourinho made his first change of the night in the 54th minute when he replaced scorer Duff with Robben. But before the change could have any significant impact, Porto levelled the scores in the 61st minute. A shot from Seitaridis was blocked by Terry but fell to Diego on the edge of the penalty area and his volley sizzled beyond the unsighted Cech to the delight of the home fans. The goal gave Porto renewed hope and for once the visitors found themselves having to defend in numbers. Cech then had to be at his best to palm away a shot from McCarthy with Porto, urged on by their fanatical supporters, went in search of a winner. Drogba was still the victim of 'monkey' chants whenever he was in a threatening position on the ball - and in the 70th minute he burst clear of the Porto defence but was forced to wait for support and the Londoners lost the focus of their attack. Drogba was replaced by Mateja Kezman in the 78th minute as Mourinho gambled on the Serbian striker grabbing a winner. Lampard should have done that moments earlier when he was through on goal with just Nuno to beat. But the England international was thwarted by a fine save from the Porto stopper, who dived low to his left to keep his side level. And McCarthy sent the home fans wild and Chelsea crashing to their first Champions League defeat of the season when he rose to head home a left-wing cross from Peixoto in the 86th minute.
