GALLACHER’S HAT-TRICK By OUR SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE SUNDERLAND ......... 4 CHELSEA ......... 0 While Sunderland are undoubtedly a fine side this season, Chelsea contri-buted to their own defeat by a display which showed that they need to make drastic improvement if they are not to struggle through the season at the foot of the League. Chelsea's forwards were much too slow, though Mills made a few efforts to break down the sound Sunderland defence, Gallacher, making his first appearance in the Leegue team this season, was not a success at inside-right. Among the half-backs, only Craig was able to do much against the quick-moving Sunder-land attack. McAulay was the better of the backs, and Woodley, the goalkeeper, was in magnificent form. Indeed, but for Woodley Sunderland’s goal total would have been much higher. Sunderland’s Gallacher was the outstanding forward, getting three goals and having a hand in nearly every raid. But he was not alone, all the other forwards playing splendidly. MILLS TESTS MIDDLETON Hastings was the pick of a set of half-backs who easily checked most of Chelsea’s spas- modic attacks. When Mills broke clear once or twice, Middleton showed what a good goal- keeper he is by making clever saves. The scoring was opened in eleven minutes, Gallacher shooting through with a left-foot drive. Twelve minutes later Gallacher beat Woodley with a header from Davis’ centre, In the second half Carter got the third with a low drive and Gallacher headed the fourth from Connor's corner kick.
